Alright, the summers have set in and it's a toss-up between an air conditioner and an air cooler. An AC can cool well but isn't portable and costs more to run. A cooler, on the other hand, is more budget-friendly and can also be moved from one room to another. Besides, coolers allow you to move around the house whereas ACs restrict your movement. Nishtha Goel, a 27-year-old Gurugram-based entrepreneur was sure she only wanted a cooler for her room. She says- “We are living at the edge of a desert, with Rajasthan right next door and the air here is particularly dry and The good old coolers that beat the heat in Nagpur since generations appear to be slowly making inroads into the Iraqi market. Iraq, where summers are worse than Vidarbha, also has a large market for air coolers. The supply is mainly dominated by exporters from Iran, China, Egypt and Turkey currently. This year, Ram Coolers, a home grown brand and also a household name in Nagpur, has bagged an order too. After sending four containers in 2020 on a sample basis, the company has bagged an order for 10 containers of coolers this summer. The first consignment is being loaded at the factory and would be ready soon. Although this may not be the first time Indian coolers have gone abroad, Ram Coolers sees it as an opportunity to make it in the international market. The order has been placed by Al Sawadiff and Co, a trading company from Iraq. “The numbers may be less at present but there is already a great demand for Ram Coolers as a brand. I am getting calls since morning,” says Kaka Ali of Al Sawadiff. A video showing an Arab family enjoying the breeze with Ram Coolers written on top has already been prepared to market the product. Since years, air coolers are preferred in the rural areas of Iraq. Based in Baghdad, Al Sawadiff has 200 agents through whom he plans to sell the product across the country, says Ali. Ali says his firm has imported 1,000 containers from Iran and 200 from China. As compared to that, he has ordered 10 from India. However, he hopes to gradually increase the quantity in coming years. “I have been exploring the Indian market since last three years and had been to Delhi also. However, I found the product by Ram Coolers to be the most suitable,” he told TOI over a telephone call. Indian brands are already popular in Iraq and so would Ram Cooler be soon, he says. The high shipping freight is however a concern. Shipping air coolers from China costs $4,500 a ton while it’s around $4,300 from India. Despite the cost dynamics, the Indian coolers beat other products in design, says Ali. Rakesh Awchat of Ram Coolers said the company began exports in 2016 by sending consignments to Sudan and Kenya. Ali approached them in 2020. An order was put up again in 2021. He expects to easily overcome the Chinese on the cost front. “We have designed the cooler in such a way that it suits the needs of Iraq in terms of electric fittings. It is also easy to assemble. A certain change in design has also helped accommodate more coolers in the container. One container will be carrying 210 coolers. It is expected that four containers would be sent by the end of the month. After that another six would be dispatched my middle of May,” he says. “Ram Coolers has been in the business since 1978 and we also took it as a challenge and completed the order as per their needs. It’s indeed prestigious for us that the company selected our brand among others in the country,” says Awchat.
